Solaris 10 release 10/08 Update Course

Length: 2 Days                   

Prerequisite: Because this course only covers new enhancements to the Solaris 10 operating environment, the student should have 3 months of experience administering Solaris 10 (a release prior to 10/08).

Recommendation Statement:
It is assumed that the student has experience with previous versions of Solaris 10 and should have attended a formal intermediate or advanced Solaris administration course (or have equivalent experience). 

Course Description: 
Although you may have experience using the Solaris 10 operating environment, several new features have been added in this most current release 10/08. This course covers only covers the new features and updates that have been added in Solaris 10 release 10/08. If you need training in all of the features of Solaris 10, check out our Solaris 10 Intermediate System Administration and Advanced System Administration courses.

Upon completion of this course, the student will possess the following skills:

Understand changes to the Solaris 10 bootstrap process on the SPARC platform

  • Install the OS on a ZFS root pool
  • Setup a mirrored ZFS root pool during the installation
  • Setup a mirrored ZFS root pool after the installation
  • Boot from a ZFS root file system
  • How to list the available datasets within a ZFS root pool
  • Boot a single miniroot installation
  • Understand the boot archive on a SPARC system
  • Use the bootadm command on a SPARC system
  • Boot a failsafe archive on a SPARC based system

Understand new features on the X86 Platform

  • Boot from a ZFS root file system
  • List the available datasets within a ZFS root pool
  • Configure a mirrored root pool
  • Use the findroot command for specifying which disk slice to boot on an x86 based system

Understand new features in JumpStart

  • Create a profile to create a ZFS storage pool and designate a bootable ZFS file system

Understand new features in Solaris Live Upgrade

  • Maintain the Solaris Live Upgrade boot environment
  • Migrate a UFS root (/) file system to a ZFS root pool
  • Create a new boot environment within an existing ZFS root pool or within another ZFS root pool
  • Create a new boot environment on a system with non-global zones installed
  • Delegate permissions to perform ZFS administration tasks to non-privileged users
