UNIX / Linux Fundamentals

Prerequisite: Basic computer skills. 

Recommendation Statement: The student should have basic computer skills.

Course Description: 
This course teaches basic and advanced topics in UNIX. The UNIX Fundamentals course provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage files and directories, create and modify files, control the user work environment, customize the shell, archive files, and use remote commands. In addition, this course explains fundamental command-line features of the UNIX Operating System , including file system navigation, the vi text editor, file permissions, access control lists (ACLs), command shells, file compression, basic network use, and reading/writing shell scripts.
Although students will be using a desktop environment, the instructor stresses the importance of learning UNIX from the “command line” and teaches the course accordingly.

UNIX Platform:
The student will choose the UNIX platform that they prefer to work with: Red Hat, SuSE, Ubuntu, Solaris, Debian, HP-UX or AIX.

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Log in and log out of UNIX
  • Use the CDE, KDE and GNOME windowing systems
  • Compose command-line strings to perform functions
  • Use command-line features and help resources
  • Navigate the directory tree
  • Manipulate text files
  • Create files and directories
  • Back up and restore user files and directories
  • Change permissions of files and directories
  • Use the vi text editor
  • Identify and modify initialization files
  • Employ shell features to streamline command execution
  • Use basic network commands
  • Use commands to search directories and files
  • List active user processes and selectively kill user processes 
  • Read and write shell scripts
  • Customize the shell
