 ExamGear Exam Updates

These updates are for those users that have purchased exams directly from UnixED. These updates will not work with the CD-ROM that came with the Bill Calkins training guide. If you need to purchase an exam, click here.

This page contains two type of updates:

Exam Updates:
This type of update contains a new or revised database of questions for each exam we sell. These updates are made available only to those that have purchased subscriptions to keep our materials as up to date as possible.

ExamGear Updates:
ExamGear updates to the actual ExamGear test engine. As we add enhancements and improvements to the test engine, we’ll post the new test engine here for you to download Free of charge.

You can also download and re-install the entire ExamGear test engine. This download will always contain the most up to date database of questions. A quick way to determine if you have the correct update is to check the number of questions available in your exam. Does that number of questions match the number of questions stated above for the update? If not, request the update. If in doubt, download the update anyway.

***You may need a new unlock code. Read This **

We changed the exam number for our exams so that they do not overlap with the exam numbers used on CD-ROM that ships with our books. When you download the update, you may need to request a new unlock code. It’s no big deal, just drop us an email requesting your new code for the update. Here’s what you need to include in the email:

Forward us a copy of the original email you received from us when we issued your last unlock code (when you purchased the exam). The subject should say:  Unlock Code Request
                                        -or-
Send us the user name and serial number that you’re using on your exam that you purchased. It needs to be the same name and serial number that matches our database. Click on the HELP button in the top toolbar and then click on ABOUT for the user and serial number information. (see the examples below). The subject of the email should say:  Unlock Code Request.  We’ll look the information up in our database to verify it and send you the new unlock code.

This is a one-time thing and should not be necessary on future updates.

A Note About Downloading

When downloading the update, sometimes your browser downloads the file as a .zip file and puts a .zip extension on the file. Make sure that when you download the file, the “Save As Type” field does not say “WinZip files”. It should say “All files”. When you save it to disk, make sure the file does not have a “.zip” extension. If it does, rename it so it only has a “.ega” extension. Don’t unzip the file- it’s not a zipped file.

Instructions for Installing Your Exam Update

An update contains new questions for your ExamGear test engine. Download the update and put the attached “.ega” file into the “Download” folder of the the ExamGear installation directory. The default location is:

Program Files -> ExamGear -> Download

The next time you startup ExamGear, the new database will automatically be recognized.

Note: Make sure the directory is named Download, not Downloads (plural). If it is Downloads, change the directory name. There was a problem with one of our distributions, and the update directory was misnamed. If the directory is not named “Download”, the updates will not be installed.

At UnixEd, we strive to keep all of our materials as up to date as possible. We have thousands of readers and users sending us their input from the real exams they’ve taken. Our materials will always be the most up to date and accurate. Your comments are always welcome. Check this page frequently, because we add, remove, and modify our database of questions frequently.

If you are in doubt as to the version of the database you have installed on your system, simply request the latest version and follow the installation instructions. Updates are small files, they download quickly, and they are easy to install.

The current version of the ExamGear testEngine is 1.6. Check your version by clicking on Help in the top toolbar
