HP-UX System and Network Administration for Experienced Unix System Administrators

Length: 4 Days

Prerequisite: Existing knowledge and system administration experience of a version of SVR4 UNIX (ie. Solaris, AIX, or Linux).

Course Description: This course covers the differences between HP-UX and generic UNIX. Because the course moves through each topic at a fast pace, it is essential that students have existing system administration experience on some version of UNIX, as this course does not cover the basics. As we review each topic, we will not review information that should have already been covered in a Sun system Administration course. It is assumed that the student is already knowledgable in the following topics:

  • Fundamental Unix commands and the vi editor
  • Unix file system concepts (ie. superblock and inode)
  • Familiar with the user account configuration files (/etc/passwd and /etc/shadow)
  • Fundamental knowledge of a Unix device file
  • Understand the function of the Unix kernel
  • Understand SVR4 file system hierarchy (/, /usr, /opt, and /var file systems)
  • Understand the difference between a directory and a file system
  • Understand fundamental SCSI terminology (ie. addressing)
  • Understand how to mount/unmount file systems
  • Understand when and how to use fsck
  • Understand Unix backup strategies (OS backups, dumps/restores)
  • Understand fundamental network (TCP/IP) terminology and concepts
  • Knowledgeable of Unix run control scripts used during the boot process
  • Understand the init process and the /etc/inittab file as it relates to the boot process
  • Understand the concept of swap space

We will only do a quick review of the above topics to describe the differences between other SVR4 environments and the HP-UX operating environment.

The operating system will be HP-UX 11i - HP's UNIX operating system. The course is taught on an HP-UX 11i system.

Course Objectives:

  • Install and manage HP-UX software and patches.
  • Configure and manage peripheral devices and device files.
  • Configure and manage disks using HP’s Logical Volume Manager (LVM).
  • Configure and manage file systems using HP’s Journal File System (JFS).
  • Configure HP-UX kernel drivers, subsystems, and tunable parameters.
  • Backup and restore files and directories, and create a bootable recovery tape.
  • Shutdown, boot, reboot HP-UX.
